IIT JEE 2012- Number of Seats for Various Categories in IITs

IIT JEE is the most prestigious engineering entrance examination in India. Admission into BE / B.Tech in world famous IITs will be done through IIT JEE. Notification for IIT JEE 2012 has been announced. Following will give you an understanding of seats available for candidates from different categories along with estimated competition for IIT JEE 2012. There are 9618 seats in various IITs (7 old IITs 8 new IITs) across the country along with IT – BHU and IMS Dhanbad. About 4.8 lakh candidates appeared for IIT JEE 2011. About 52000 candidates were attended for IIT JEE 2011 from Andhra Pradesh. Out of these about 2400 candidates got seats in various IITs. At the all India level, competition for a seat is at the ratio of 1:50. But in Andhra Pradesh, the seat and candidates ratio is 1:22.

Following are details of seats in various IITs. Category wise seats available in IITs located at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, IIT – BHU Varanasi, ISM Dhanbad, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Indore, IIT Mandi, IIT Patna, IIT Ropar and IIT Rajasthan. Details such as branch wise seats, IIT JEE 2011 cut offs, seats, last ranks etc. will be very much useful for aspirants of IIT JEE 2012. Seats for categories such as GE (General), GEPD, OBC, OBC- PD, SC, SC PD, ST and STPD are listed in the table given below:

Branch Wise Total Number of Seats in IITs

Following table will provide you the number of seats in IITs for various Branches / Subjects. This data is based on the seats filled in IIT JEE 2010. There may be increase in number of seats in some IITs. There were 9509 seats in all IITs during IIT JEE 2010 admission. This year for IIT JEE 2011 candidates, the total number of seats has increased to 9618. Candidates can estimate their chances of grabbing a seat in IIT of their choice based on the 2011 Merit List Cut Off for various categories of candidates.

IITs offer more than 80 branches in B.Tech. and Dual Degree Programs. Most of the students opt for main stream branches such as Electronics and Communications, Electrical, Civil, Chemical, Biotech, Aerospace, Mechanical, Mining, Computers, Mettalurgy etc. Following table will give you number of seats in these branches in IITs at Madras, Bombay, Delhi, Gauhati, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee, IT – BHU and ISM Dhanbad.
