Joint Entrance Exam – JEE for IIT, NIT and IIIT Admissions from 2013-14

The proposed joint entrance examination (JEE) for admission to Engineering programmes (B.Tech / BE) in IITs, NITs and IIITs will be held from the next academic year, 2012-13. The Joint Councils of the IITs, NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutions has accepted the proposal to the HRD Ministry to conduct joint entrance exam for these reputed technical institutions. Most important change of the selection process is that the marks obtained in Class XII Board examinations will also be considered in the admissions.

Initially it was reported that the IITs had not in favour of the single entrance considering the standards of the institutions. The IITs have managed to persuade HRD Minister Kapil Sibal to allow them to maintain a separate merit list from the common entrance. This process will be reviewed after 2015 and IITs will also join the common merit list from that year.

Exam Structure: There will be two stages in the new JEE 2013-13. The test will be conducted by the IITs’ Joint Admission Board (JAB). The two parts in the test are : JEE Main and JEE Advanced. The marks secured in Class XII Board or its equivalent stream will be normalized with percentiles plus the marks obtained in the JEE-main test with equal weightage. Other institutions will use different weightage percentiles for screening candidates.

The Government has announced the structure of proposed JEE Main / Advanced. This exam is going to replace reputed engineering entrance tests, JEE and AIEEE from 2013. The JEE Main / Advanced will be the single entrance examination for admission to Engineering (BE / B.Tech) and Science Courses across the country including IITs, NITs, IIITs and several other government and private institutions. The Ministry of Human Resource Development has released the exam structure, proposed weightage for Intermediate / 10+2 marks in JEE 2013. The firstever JEE Main / Advanced 2013 is likely to be held in either March or April. IIT Kanpur is working on the further modalities of the test. As pr the sources, CBSE will be entrusted with the responsibility of conducting the ISEET exam.

JEE Main will be more in the lines of SAT. The JEE Main is aimed at reducing the stress levels of students through avoiding multiple examinations. JEE question paper will have two parts. These are JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Each of these papers will be given three hours duration. Both Main and Advance tests will be given on the same day, between 10 am and 5 pm.

1) Structure of JEE Main Exam: This exam will be in objective multiple choice type mode. The exam will test candidate’s comprehension, critical thinking and logical reasoning.
2) Structure of JEE Advance Test: This will test candidate’s problem-solving ability in basic science subjects. The performance of the candidate in two tests together will indicate his / her scholastic level and aptitude for science and engineering programmes.

Weightage to Intermediate / 10+2 Marks: Important feature of this exam is weightage to Intermediate or 10+2 marks of the students in drawing final rankings. This weightage will not be lesser than 40 percent of the total score of the candidate in JEE. Total or combined weightage for JEE Main and Advance exams will not be more than 60 per cent. However, as per the recommendations of the Ramasami committee the weightage given to Board scores can go up to 100 per cent in due course. The concerned state Governments will decide the specific weight it gives to Board, Main and Advance exam scores based on the formula drawn by the higher examination authorities.
