IITs and NITs to hike Engineering Fee Structure from 2016-17

The Government of India is proposed to hike fee in the premier technical institutions in the country, Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) from the academic year 2016-17. The fee hike has been recommended by the Department of Human Resources Development of Government of India.

The present fee for engineering programmes in NITs is Rs. 70000 and the proposed new fee is Rs. 1.25 lakh. The fee being collected in IITs is Rs. 90000 and the proposed fee is Rs. 2.5 lakhs.

With these changes, the four year engineering course in NITs costs Rs. 5 lakhs and Rs. 10 lakhs in IITs. The Government is in the process of cutting the cost being spend on each student in these institutions.

The Government has informed that the education loans will be provided to the students of NITs and IITs with nominal interest rates. The Government is proposed to limit its expenditure in these institutions for salaries, library and lab facilities etc.
