A students queried, I completed my BTech in EEE, got admission into JNTU Hyderabad for M.Tech under GeoInformatics and Surveying Technology. But I dont have any idea on the course, future, and job opportunities. Please help me whether is it good to proceed irrespective of my background (EEE) or not to.
– Radha Krishna
Answer: Dear Radha Krishna, this course at JNTU is well-planned curriculum, which is a blend of theory, practice, on field learning and customised software development. Occasionally, experts from Survey of India and NRSC Scientists conduct field trainings, lectures, seminars and workshops. All these contribute to enhanced learning in students.
Students from non-civil engineering background like you initially face problems. However smart students catch up pretty soon. Geoinformatics is a fast growing field and has great potential. It is quite promising in terms of research in areas like natural resource management, disaster management and earth sciences.
Coming to placements, mostly, private organisations like Google, TCS, Infosys, InfoTech, Wipro, Capgemini, ESRI and Rolta conduct recruitments and hire these students. Government organisations provide good opportunities to professionals in geoinformatics. They are typically absorbed as JRF, SRF and scientist/engineers. They go through the induction process after they are selected.
