The prestigious Entrance Examinations for Engineering courses in India, IIT JEE, AIEEE and several other national and state level tests such as EAMCET, TANCET, Comed-K, WBEEE, OJEE, etc will go from next year (2013) if the recommendations of a committee headed by secretary of Department of Science and Technology T Ramaswamy comes into effect. The IITs council has almost accepted the proposed recommendations to get away with several exams and introduction of new all India level single entrance examination. The main component of the changes will be weightage for Class XII / Intermediate scores in the overall admissions / JEE scores.

The Government is yet to formulate and finalise modalities for the proposed new engineering entrance examination. The Government is estimating that a large number of state board students from every corner of India likely to take the JEE with the implementation of the core science curriculum for all the schools across the country. Presently the IIT JEE is dominated by the students who studies CBSE curriculum.

The council of IITs has already accepted the proposed pan-India common entrance test for engineering programmes possibly from the academic year 2013-14. The proposal is yet to get the nod from Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) committee ans also should be cleared by state ministers. IF everything goes fine, the new JEE for engineering will be a reality by 2013. The Govt .of India has constituted a committee headed by T Ramasami to examine implementation of a single all India level entrance test for engineering. The committee has come up with six options and Ramasami has been asked to finalise one of these options within a month.

Weightage Procedure: The Government and IITs are mulling on the modalities to give weightage for Class XII exams in JEE scores. It is proposed that an all India level merit list will be prepared based on the combined weightage given to class XII exam and to a common entrance test (to be named). The new test is likely to test and examine a students logic and non-subject matters. The weightage will be given to the marks obtained in class XII / Intermediate boards of the states after the entrance test results are equalized. The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI, Kolkata) has been entrusted to draw mathematical formula for equalization of entrance scores and class XII marks. Some state like Andhra Pradesh are expressing apprehensions over implementation of equalization procedure.
