Government of India is planning to conduct a single entrance examination for all engineering colleges from the academic year 2018-19. The admission test will be for admission into all engineering colleges, including private institutions, across the country.
The proposed joint entrance examination (JEE) for engineering colleges will be held from 2018, as per the proposal of HRD ministry of Govt of India. The test will be on the lines of the national eligibility- cum- entrance exam (NEET), conducted by CBSE for entry into medical colleges.
The common entrance for engineering admissions is aimed at bringing transparency in the admission procedure, checking malpractices in private engineering colleges and to control heavy capitation fee in various colleges.
India has more than 3,300 approved engineering colleges which are affiliated to various universities. The total intake is approximately around 1.6 million.Only half of the seats are filled every year.
Number of states conduct their own admission test for engineering courses. Several private colleges charge high fees in the name of management and NRI quotas. AICTE will come out with guidelines for the propoased new all India engineering entrance examination.
