ID Numbers to School Students in Karnataka

The Government of Karnataka has decided to provide identification numbers to all the school students in the state. The Govt. will allot permanent identification numbers to all the students from class I to class X in all Government, aided and unaided private schools in the state. The initiative is aimed at checking dropout rates under Right to Education (RTE) Act.

The Government of Karnataka has informed that the reparations have been under progress to issue 16 digit numbers to students of all the schools in state. The process is likely to be completed by the end of December 2012.

The authorities will take student’s photograph, thumb impression along with details of date of birth, blood group, birthplace, particulars of parents and address at the time of allotting ID numbers. The details will be uploaded to the Education Department’s website and students permanent identity numbers will be issued based on that information. All the government departments can avail the data of the students.

These number system is expected to track the progress of the students, check dropouts and misuse of government schemes for school students such as distribution of free textbooks and uniforms. The Govt. has already collected date of nearly 1.06 crore children who are studying I to VIII standards and the process for remaining classes in under progress.
