Allahabad HC stays Lucknow University Student Elections

Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has stayed the student union elections of Lucknow University (LU) till October 17, 2012. The student union elections were scheduled to be held on October 15 and the nomination process is under progress. The court will hear the petition on 17th October 2012 for further deliberations.

The division bench of the court has ordered stay on the elections following a petition by a student Hemant Singh. He alleged that the Lucknow University elections are not being held according to the Lyngdoh Committee recommendation.

The petitioner has observed that the Lyngdoh Committee has recommended that the age eligibility of the contesting candidates should be counted from the new academic session. The LU has violated this guideline and was counting the date of birth from the day of start of the nominations process. The course issued notices to Lucknow University and Uttar Pradesh Government to respond on the matter.
